Ayurveda traces its origins to the Adharva Veda (one of the four most ancient books of Indian knowledge, wisdom and culture) contains 114 hymns or formulations for the treatment of diseases. The earliest literature on Indian medical practice appeared during this Vedic period, i.e., in the mid-second millennium BCE. The origin of Ayurvedic medicine is attributed to Dhanvathiri the physician of the gods.
Over the following centuries, Ayurvedic practitioners developed a number of medicinal preparations and surgical procedures for the treatment of various ailments. Ayurveda also focuses on exercise, Yoga and meditation.
According to Ayurveda, human being, is the combination of body, mind, senses, ego, intelligence and soul. In Ayurveda, disease is always seen as an imbalance in the dosha system. As a result, the diagnostic process strives to determine which doshas are underactive or overactive in a body. Ayurveda offers mainly three kinds of treatment - through Ayurvedic medicines, diet and lifestyle control and Panchakarma.
The practice of panchakarma is a therapeutic way of eliminating toxic elements from the body(therapeutic cleansing of the body) and rejuvenation as a treatment for many chronic conditions. Regular massage of body(called uzhichil) with Medicated oils, is the most effective tool to relax and rejuvenate the entire Human body metabolism.
High importance is given to Hygienic living which involves regular bathing, cleansing of teeth, skin care, and eye washing. Daily anointing of the body with oil is also prescribed.
Ayurveda stresses the use of plant-based medicines and treatments. Hundreds of plant-based medicines (Rasayana, Kashayas and oils)are employed .Some animal products are also be used, like Milk, Honey , Butter etc. Ayurvedic treatment with minerals added to herbal medicine is known as “Rasa Shastra”.

YOGA
Yoga can be explained in the simplest form, as an exercise of body and mind to attain physical, Mental and spiritual discipline.
Yoga and meditation are found to improve cognitive functions and reduce stress in schizophrenia, a condition associated with cognitive deficits and stress-related relapse. Those who practiced Yoga were better in their social and occupational functions and quality of life.
The three main focuses of Hatha yoga (exercise, breathing, and meditation) make it beneficial to those suffering from heart disease. Regular yoga practice increases brain IQ levels and has been shown to improve mood and the total mental well being of an individual.
